99% of what's relevant to any visit to a doctor's office takes place outside the visit. The doctor cannot see to it that the patient gets enough sleep, eats healthy, exercises, manages stress, avoids unhealthy habits and substances, or even takes the medication correctly. All of that is up to the patient. If the patient drops the ball on all the day-to-day smart, healthy, maintenance choices, and then blames the doctor for not coming up with a magic "healthy pill," then that's just the patient's foolishness and refusal to take any responsibility.
At my first class meetings, I plan to talk through all that with my students and see if they agree. Then I'll remind them what my title is, and I'll leave it at that.
